In preparation for the upcoming panchayat elections in Uttarakhand, the threat of monsoon disruptions has prompted authorities to take extraordinary precautions. With many roads already blocked due to heavy rains, the State Election Commission is considering airlifting polling teams by helicopter if needed.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has ordered two helicopters to be kept on standby to handle election-day emergencies. Election Commissioner Sushil Kumar confirmed that all District Magistrates have been asked to submit detailed disaster management plans. A video conference scheduled for July 7 will finalise logistics and resource requirements.
The first and second phases of the panchayat elections are set for July 24 and 28 respectively — right in the middle of peak monsoon activity. The Election Commission is also in constant touch with the Meteorological Department to monitor weather conditions.
