Dehradun, June 24, 2025 – The BJP has issued a show-cause notice to former Uttarakhand MLA Suresh Rathore following his public announcement of a second marriage with actress Urmila Sanawar, despite still being married to his first wife. The party has accused him of violating the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and tarnishing its image .
📝 Party Notice:
The notice, signed by State General Secretary Rajendra Bisht on orders from State President Mahendra Bhatt, demands an explanation within seven days.
The BJP has charged Rathore with “indiscipline and conduct unbecoming of a party leader.”
🎭 The Controversial Announcement:
On June 15, Rathore held a press event in Saharanpur alongside actress Urmila Sanawar, referring to her as his wife and making the relationship public.
Sanawar confirmed their marriage took place on October 4, 2022, at the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal, asserting the union predates the UCC’s January 2025 implementation in Uttarakhand.
⚖️ Legal and Political Ramifications:
With Uttarakhand being the first state to enforce the UCC, which prohibits polygamy and requires marriage registration, Rathore's announcement has sparked political controversy.
The Congress has accused the BJP of hypocrisy, demanding consistent enforcement of the UCC.
🙏 Rathore's Response:
A veteran leader with over 44 years in the party, Rathore defended his actions, calling the marriage “lawful and spiritual” and expressed his intention to continue serving the party and "Sanatan Dharma".
He has not finalized a divorce from his first wife, which adds to the legal complexity.
⚠️ What’s Next:
The BJP will review Rathore’s response before deciding on disciplinary or legal steps.
This case may set a key legal and ethical precedent under the state’s UCC framework.
